Education Initiatives
With a deep understanding of the collective needs of students, educators, and learning institutions, the NVMM provides a unique platform for growth and development. Through its immersive exhibits and engaging programs, it fosters an environment where tomorrow’s leaders can thrive, finding stability and sustenance in the stories and sacrifices of our brave Veterans.
By bridging the gap between the past and the present, the National Veterans Memorial and Museum paves the way for a brighter future, where gratitude, empathy, and perseverance shape our society.
Educational Programming supported by Battelle and Northwest Bank.
Salute to Service Artwork Contest
During the summer of 2023, people of all ages were encouraged to convey their personal connection to the Veteran experience through artistic expression. A panel of six judges evaluated nearly 30 submissions, ultimately selecting winners and finalists across four categories: youth, teen, adult, and active duty/Veteran. The works, both winners and finalists, were framed and proudly showcased inside the Museum.
The Salute to Service Artwork Contest is presented by Battelle.
Letter Writing
Words hold incredible power, and when used to express gratitude, they become even more powerful. In 2023, the NVMM community came together to spread love and appreciation through thank-you letters. With over 1000 heartfelt letters collected, including 690 from our special letter writing station, we have created a ripple effect of gratitude that reaches far and wide.
Outreach with Columbus Recreation & Parks
Each Thursday during the summer, we extended a warm welcome to campers from 12 different Columbus Recreation and Parks Department Community Centers to the Museum. Free admission was offered to these groups, and campers were treated to enriching guided tours, exclusive opportunities to converse with Reservists and Veterans, and immersive hands-on learning experiences.
Journaling Workshops
In collaboration with Dead Reckoning Collective and the Ohio Poet Laureate, we organized two writing workshops for Veterans and civilians. These sessions provided a unique opportunity for participants to unlock their creativity and discover the joy of writing.
Certificate in Public and Nonprofit Leadership for Veterans (LCERT)
Our partnership with The Ohio State University’s John Glenn College of Public Affairs hosts a Certificate in Public and Nonprofit Leadership for Veterans as a graduate-level program offering six credit hours. Our fourth cohort is now in session with 18 dedicated students nationwide, paving the way for a brighter future in 2024.
NVMM Young Leader Scholarship
In partnership with Franklinton High School, we launched our inaugural Young Leader Scholarship. Together, we awarded scholarships to two remarkable high school seniors, Juan Rosales and Amelia Martinez Rivera. This is just the beginning of their inspiring journey towards success and making a positive impact in their communities. We believe that empowering young leaders like Juan and Amelia will shape a brighter future for all.
SPECIAL EVENTS
Throughout the year, we host a diverse array of special events, providing enriching and dynamic experiences for visitors of all interests.
Exhibitions that tell a story
Our exhibitions explore the distinctive journey of American Veterans and include themes of continued service, PTSD, sacrifice, and health and wellness. In 2023, we shared a unique narrative journey by presenting individual stories and collective histories of our nation’s service members and guiding visitors to learn from both our differences and our shared experiences.
